Big Council Night Tonight: Avienda and an Interim City Manager · Two of this fall's biggest local stories land in front of the City Council tonight, Oct. 12, at 7 PM in the Council Chambers at City Hall. The first is the amended plan for Avienda, the Coborn's Market & Table development, which now proposes fuel pumps and a medical user alongside its restaurants and shops, plus changes to parking, landscaping, setbacks, and signage, including a directory sign up to 30 feet tall that would list major tenants for drivers on Highway 212. The Council is also expected to consider a contract for an interim city manager, who would start Dec. 7 and stay on until a permanent hire, which the city expects around April or May. See the Avienda project page
Galpin Boulevard Closes Tuesday Through Saturday · If Galpin is part of your commute, this is the week to find another way. The road closes between the West 78th Street and Longacres roundabouts starting Tuesday, Oct. 13, so crews can mill, patch, pave, and stripe, with the work expected to wrap up by Saturday, weather permitting. Two Voting Dates This Week · Tuesday, Oct. 13 is the last day to pre-register for the Nov. 3 general election, which includes this year's mayor and City Council races. Miss it? You can still register at your polling place on Election Day. Then on Friday, Oct. 16, early voting opens. Full voting details
Century Trail Wins Ready Together, and a Firefighter Remembered · Congratulations to the Century Trail neighborhood, the winner of the Chanhassen Fire Department's Ready Together campaign. The department also marked Fire Prevention Week by sharing that Mick Wiborg was recognized at the Minnesota Fallen Firefighter Memorial Service at the State Capitol. Wiborg, a volunteer Chanhassen firefighter, died in 1998 after a heart attack during the department's annual physical test. He was deeply involved in the department's fire prevention programs and had volunteered at Chanhassen Elementary for years. Watch the Chan Check-In

Kiddywampus
Looking for a birthday gift that won't end up forgotten in a closet? Kiddywampus, the interactive toy store at 860 W 78th St, opened its Chanhassen doors in September 2020 and has built its reputation on hands-on toy testing. Kids get to actually play with LEGO, Playmobil, Jellycat, Schleich, and other favorites before anything goes home with you. Amy Saldanha, a Minnesota lawyer and mother of three, founded the store in 2006, and it has since grown to three metro locations in Chanhassen, Hopkins, and St. Louis Park while staying women-owned. As Saldanha sees it, kids learn best when they're fully engaged, which is the whole idea behind letting them test-drive toys before they buy.
The real draw for parents might be the Birthday Bins program. A few weeks before their birthday, your kid fills a bin with the toys on their wish list, and relatives or friends can shop straight from it, in store or by phone, which makes it especially handy for family out of town. Kiddywampus also runs weekly classes and seasonal camps, and hosts full-service birthday parties in its dedicated party room, with staff handling the setup, activities, and cleanup.

Trivia Answer
Tonka, named after Lake Minnetonka. Mound Metalcraft opened in 1946 in an old schoolhouse in Mound, planning to make garden tools and tie racks. Then it picked up the designs for a few steel toys from a local company, and after selling about 37,000 toy cranes and steam shovels in its first year, the founders went all in on toys. The company officially became Tonka Toys in 1955, the bright yellow Mighty Dump Truck rolled out in 1965, and Tonka trucks were inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 2001.
